With Andy Murray confirmed as world number one, tennis fans in Wandsworth have something else to celebrate with work now well underway on upgrading six tennis venues across the borough.
All Star Tennis, which manages 28 courts on Wandsworth Common, Tooting Common, King George’s Park, Wandsworth Park, Furzedown Rec in Tooting and Leader’s Gardens in Putney, is investing over half a million pounds in improving the facilities.
The courts at both Wandsworth and Tooting Common have already been refurbished and work has now begun at Leader’s Gardens in Putney.
At King George’s Park, the improvement scheme also includes the installation of floodlights, providing much needed additional playing opportunities for Wandsworth residents.
Once these two projects have been completed, attention will turn to upgrading the playing facilities in Wandsworth Park and Furzedown Rec.
All Star Tennis began working in the borough in 2002 when it began managing the courts on Wandsworth Common. In 2013 it teamed up with another tennis provider Will to Win and took on the other five venues in a partnership which has see participation levels rocket by 80 per cent.
All Star Tennis co-founder Ben White said:
“We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the new improved facilities and hope to see even more players enjoying their time on court across the borough.
“We would like to thank the tennis playing community for their support and Wandsworth Council for their vision and forward thinking that has enabled us to create a cohesive approach and allow high quality public tennis to flourish across the borough.”
Steve Riley founder of Will to Win said “This is a landmark moment for Wandsworth tennis and the six sites we are developing. We have worked in delivering quality community sports facilities for the past 20 year creating quality affordable and accessible facilities, with a long term approach. The partnership with All Star tennis and investment of over £500,000 shows our level of commitment.
“And with the floodlit facility coming to King George’s Park, it will enable year-round play, which is a great boost for the sport in Wandsworth.”
