South west London’s stem4 has won two honours at this year’s Third Sector Awards, receiving gongs for Small Charity of the Year 2022 and Chief Executive of the Year 2022 for Dr Nihara Krause.
Celebrating outstanding efforts within the voluntary sector, the Third Sector Awards were developed to recognise the achievements of charities and provide a platform for examples of good practice.
On receiving the awards, stem4’s Dr Nihara Krause said, “We’re thrilled to be acknowledged with these awards for the 11 plus years of evidence-based support we have offered to young people and all those who help them achieve positive mental health.”
The judges described stem4 as, “Packing a lot of punch for a small charity – a strong impact developed through strong relationships.”
stem4, which is based in St George’s road, supports the mental health of young people on many levels. These include mental health education, both face-to-face and via its digital programmes, the creation of free, evidence-based mental health apps, and numerous resources. The charity also supports parents and carers, educators, GPs and school nurses, ensuring that everyone involved in supporting a young person can work together to help them negotiate the challenges they face, enabling them to thrive.
stem4’s vital work has supported more than a 100,000 young people with their mental health over the past year alone.
The judges particularly highlighted the work of the Charity’s Chief Executive Nihara Krause: “Dr Krause is doing some amazing work. To create this much good, voluntarily, on top of your day job, is extraordinary.”

Clinical Psychologist Dr Nihara Krause founded stem4 more than a decade ago with the aim of supporting teenagers’ mental health. As chief executive and lead clinical officer, she has worked to enhance resilience and provide early and effective clinical tools at a time when mental health services are stretched. As a clinician, she is also aware of the importance of interdisciplinary working and has created effective training for doctors and nurses as well as educators.
The charity points out that a decade ago there was minimal focus on teenage mental health, but Dr Krause had the vision and dedication to provide clinically safe resources to teenagers, parents and carers, schools, and primary health care workers. Dr Krause has since developed four mental health apps (with a fifth on the way), a digital mental health literacy programme, numerous COVID-19 related resources translated into six languages, and provided hundreds of talks and webinars. She focuses on evidence-based practice, co-creation, inclusion, and diversity.
stem4’s website can be found at https://stem4.org.uk/contact/ and includes info on the mental health apps Calm Harm, Clear Fear, Move Mood, Combined Minds and Worth Warrior
