Knitted Hats Wanted for Inmates of Wandsworth Prison

The Southfields Grid Residents Association and the Southfields Grid Alliance have launched an appeal for donations of knitted hats.

These are to be given to inmates at Wandsworth Prison to help keep them warm during the winte.

Liz Bridge, the chaplain at Wandsworth prison, contacted the residents’ group again after they held a very successful appeal for books over the summer.

She said, “chaplains are hoping to give every man in the prison a knitted hat at Christmas. A beanie or a pompom hat for example, but all types are welcomed, in any colour but NOT BLACK (Officers wear black). All prisoners go out on the exercise yards in just a track suit, but no-one has a coat. It means our exercise yards are very shivery places, especially for the baldies, the oldies and the people who have had their hair cut short.

“Please could you ask your members if they could rummage through their cupboards and drawers and any other places where unwanted woolly adult hats fester? We need to get about 1500 hats, and currently have about 25, so there is a long way to go. There are a lot of ugly and unwanted woolly hats in the world, and they would be such a help to us.

“Thank you so much for your patience and generosity”.

If you have any woollen hats to spare collect them up, then drop them off by Friday 18 December at the following local addresses:

15 Elsenham Street
78 Heythorp Street
127 Heythorp Street
81 Lavenham Road
169 Trentham Street
15 Pirbright Road
St Barnabas Church, Lavenham Road entrance

If you are unable to drop them off they can be collected. Call Becky Watts, the coordinator of the Southfields Grid Alliance, on 07734 818540 and she will arrange collection from you if you live locally.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
