Putney Bridge Subway Refurbishment Nearly Finished

The subway has been given a complete makeover by Wandsworth Council and now boasts new LED lighting, attractive new mosaic tiling and a tiled mural specially designed by a local artist, making safer, brighter and more pleasant experience

The project is the final part of the £1.5m refurbishment of Putney Bridge, which Wandsworth carried out in the summer of 2014 and was completed two weeks ahead of schedule and right on budget.

The repairs to the Grade II Listed bridge were designed to protect it against water penetration and also saw many of its ornate Victorian features fully restored, including its ornate lamp columns which were also fitted with modern LED lights to make them shine brighter.

Works to the subway could not be carried out at the same time because they required planning consent from Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

This gave Wandsworth time to liaise with the Fulham Society and arrange for local artist Jean Bird to create a striking design for the new mural which has the theme of a tree-lined walkway inspired by Bishop’s Park.

Wandsworth’s transport spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said:
“This is the last piece of the jigsaw in the Putney Bridge project and I have no doubt that the many people who use this subway every day will be mightily impressed at its transformation.

“The mosaic tiling and the mural have really given it a new lease of life while the more efficient new lighting is also a great improvement. From start to finish the whole Putney Bridge repair project has ben carried out with great care and efficiency, I must pay tribute to all the engineers involved who deserve great credit for their efforts, and I would also like to thanks Ms Bird and the Fulham Society, particularly its chairman Lady Fowler, for helping to create such a striking and attractive design. I’m delighted we have been able to bring it to life.”
