Putney High Celebrates A Levels Results

Travel Scholar Amongst Those Set to Erupt with Joy

Putney High School is today celebrating A level results with 87% of entries achieving A* - B grades. More than half of all entries achieved A* or A grades.

Amelia Stewart scooped three A*s and one A as well as an A* in the prestigious Extended Project Qualification. The results come after Amelia travelled to Hawaii to research volcanoes when she was awarded Putney’s Academic Travel Scholarship (Elsa Maud Plant).

Another Academic Travel scholar, Alexandra Willems used her award to travel to Shanghai to research its care of children with autism. Alexandra, who worked in a Chinese school for children with autism, is the first student to take A level Mandarin at Putney.

Abigail Popple has secured a place to read Architecture at the University of Cambridge while Sabrina Carpio has been awarded a scholarship to study Architecture at Syracuse University, USA. They join six other Putney students who have chosen Art related courses, including three who will be starting Art Foundation courses.

Most Putney students will be heading for Russell Group universities, with courses ranging from Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at the University of Cambridge to Medicine at Imperial College London, Neuroscience at UCL, Engineering at Durham and Theology at Edinburgh.

Dr Denise Lodge, Headmistress of Putney High School, said: “We encourage students to excel academically but also to develop the intellectual confidence and curiosity needed for the next stage of their lives – through A levels, the Extended Project qualification and the many other opportunities available, such as our unique Academic Travel scholarship in Modern Foreign Languages and the Sciences. This gives students the chance to go abroad to conduct university-level research on a topic of interest to them.”

Of the 65 students who sat A Levels at Putney this summer, almost one third earned A*s or As in at least three subjects. In addition, they benefited from Putney’s World Class Universities programme and the Putney Tripos, aimed at inspiring and nurturing independence, creativity and ambition.

The results come as Putney has announced it is expanding its scholarship programme to offer Academic, Music and Sport Scholarships at Year 7 (11+) and Music and Sport awards at Year 9 (13+). At Sixth Form, the following scholarships are available: Academic, Art, Design, Drama, Music and Sport as well as the Academic Travel Scholarships.
