New building will be operational by February 2006
The new building for Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton, will open in February 2006 and will now include the specialist burns dressing clinic that is provided by Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust. This opening date is eight weeks later than previously planned and allows time for additional construction work but means that the burns clinic will open at the same time as the new hospital.
Work on the burns clinic is already underway and Wandsworth Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) will continue to work closely with Catalyst Healthcare, the private finance consortium partners in the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital redevelopment, to review the construction against project plans.
Mike Davis, Chief Executive of Catalyst Healthcare, said “Wandsworth PCT and Catalyst have agreed on a new completion date for Queen Mary’s. This avoids the need for continued building works once the hospital is operational. Catalyst welcomes the variation to the project, which not only secures a specialist service, but also enhances the viability of the scheme, resulting in significant operational and financial benefits for the PCT.”
The burns clinic offers facilities for children recovering from severe burns and an occupational therapy room to assist patients’ rehabilitation. Helen Walley, Chief Executive, said “The new hospital opening date has many advantages for patients, staff and the PCT. While the slight delay is regrettable, we are extremely pleased to be able to open the burns unit alongside our other clinical facilities. This minimises disruption to the existing burns clinic and means we can transfer all services to the new site simultaneously.”
In addition to the burns clinic, the new three story hospital will provide 50 elderly and intermediate care beds, 20 rehabilitation beds, limb fitting and specialist rehabilitation services, a day hospital for older people, a minor injuries unit, outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities. The site will also house 69 mental health care beds and mental health community and day hospital facilities run by South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust.
