£1000 grant to purchase plants and equipment for a special garden
The Year Two pupils from Mosaic Jewish Primary School have been awarded a £1000 grant from Unilever following a competitive pitch at City Hall. The grant which was awarded as part of the Golden Garden Project, will be used to purchase equipment and plants for a special garden at the School's new Roehampton site.
The group of 6 and 7 year olds presented their garden design, which includes a vegetable garden, the produce from which will be enjoyed by the students and also shared with those in need from the local community. Particular focus has been given to recycling and composting as part of this sustainable gardening project.
The key messages that the children highlighted in their presentation to the Unilever judging panel were the commitment to the Jewish value of 'looking after our world' (tikkun olam), making people healthier and reducing waste.
Head teacher Kate Baum commented, "We are very proud of our Year Two pupils and we are very excited to begin work on our Golden Garden. We have already begun to select our new greenhouse, watering system and a food composter."
"We have also enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with local faith schools, including Gatton Islamic Primary School sharing our common goal of preserving our environment and developing cross communal relationships."
The following excerpt is from the letter from City Hall with excellent feedback on how well the pupils did:
“The judges were incredibly inspired by the presentation and felt that the students gave a really engaging and interactive pitch. We would like to commend your use of visual aids and the overall presentation. The students who attended showed great confidence and should be very proud of their achievement, particularly given their young age. We were impressed by the use of very clear objectives on what you want to achieve by Summer 2016 and commend you on a great project idea.“
The children have now moved their focus to preparing for a fresh produce festival to be held at the school in October 2016. This event aims to build on strong links with the local community and benefit the local residents.
