Phone mast web pages launched

Council calls for more information on health issues

Wandsworth Council planning applications chairman Ravi Govindia is backing calls for a nationwide public information campaign explaining the health issues associated with mobile phone masts.

The council has launched an online service for residents which summarises the known facts about phone masts and explains the planning rules which local authorities have to follow for new proposals.

Cllr Govindia said ministers should be sending a simple phone mast fact sheet to every home in the country:

"This is an issue of genuine concern to many people. The Government needs to spell out the known health facts simply and clearly. This is something the Stewart Report called for in 2000.

"Most people do not realise that councils are not allowed to take their health fears into account when deciding applications. As a result they are often left feeling frustrated by the planning process."

The new council webpages provide links to Government planning guidance and to the 'Sitefinder' service which offers an online postcode search for anyone seeking to identify masts in their area.

Visitors to the site can also email their views on any aspect of the current Government controls over new installations
