Wildfire Takes Hold in Gunnersbury Park
Public told to avoid the area while firefighters tackle the blaze

A grass fire broke out in Gunnersbury Park on Tuesday afternoon (21 July), prompting a swift response from the London Fire Brigade and warnings for the public to avoid the area while crews worked to bring the blaze under control.
The fire was reported at 12:44pm with three fire engines and one of the Brigade’s specialist Terrain Support Vehicles sent to tackle flames spreading across open ground in the vicinity of the entrance at the north west corner of the park.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We were called at 1244 hrs today to reports of grass alight at Gunnersbury Park on Popes Lane, W3. Three fire engines and one of the Brigade's Terrain Support Vehicles are currently in attendance. The public are advised to avoid the area at this time whilst firefighters work to extinguish the fire.”
The Terrain Support Vehicle — designed specifically for incidents in parks, heathland and uneven terrain — carries around 475 litres of water and allows firefighters to pump water while driving. This capability helps crews reach remote areas quickly and tackle grass fires more safely, especially during dry summer conditions.
With temperatures rising and parks across west London seeing increased footfall, authorities have issued clear guidance to help reduce the risk of further wildfires:
- Avoid using barbecues in parks or open spaces.
- Do not leave glass bottles, which can magnify sunlight and ignite dry grass.
- If bins are full, take rubbish home.
- Dispose of cigarettes responsibly or use a portable ashtray.
- If you spot a fire, move to a safe distance and call 999 immediately.

The cause of the Gunnersbury Park fire has not yet been confirmed, and firefighters remain on scene. Residents and park visitors are asked to continue avoiding the area until the incident is fully resolved.
