A special needs employment fair run by South Thames College & Council
More than 200 people went along to the Get Set GO! event to help young people with special educational needs get into education, employment or training.
The event was organised jointly by the council and South Thames College and aimed to inspire young people aged 14-25 and support them to make informed choices about their future.
It also provided information to parents, carers and professionals such as social workers and careers advisors about the support and services available in Wandsworth, with experts on hand to answer any concerns young people or their parents or carers had about their future.
There were stands, workshops and presentations, with more than 25 exhibitors chatting to young people and offering demonstrations and advice.
Young people who have found work talked about their experiences and there were workshops, refreshments from the Share Community and a performance by the Baked Bean Theatre Company.
Evaluations forms filled out on the day showed that 95 per cent of visitors agreed that attending the event helped them to find out more about what training and support is available for over 16s, with 91 per cent intending to follow up contact with one or more of the organisations they met.
The feedback will be used to help shape another Get Set GO! event next year.
Business spokesman Cllr Kim Caddy said:
“I’m delighted that so many young people attended this event. Inward investment and regeneration mean there’s a host of job and training opportunities in our borough. We want to make sure all our young people, including those with special needs, have the knowledge they need to take advantage of them.
“The event is part of our on-going Aspirations programme which is a council-wide initiative aimed at improving local residents’ life chances and helping them achieve their goals.”
