Excellent Development for Local Charity
Simon Maddrell commended for work at tree planting charity
        Simon Maddrell, Founder of a local charity Excellent Development has been 
        “Highly Commended” after being nominated for the prestigious Beacon Prize 
        2003, for his philanthropic endeavours.
        
        Beacon, a new charitable initiative, which is raising the profile of philanthropy 
        in the UK, awards the Beacon Prize to individuals who are an inspiration 
        to others in the way that they give their time and/or money to good causes.
        
        Simon was nominated for his efforts in founding and setting up a new internet-based 
        charity planting trees and building small-scale dams in Africa.
        
        
 
        “In an almost impossibly difficult process, with many hundreds of outstanding 
        nominations, Simon’s achievements stood out as exceptional,” commented 
        Emily Stonor, Chief Executive of Beacon. “We congratulate Simon, as reaching 
        the final shortlist is a considerable mark of recognition for his achievement.”
        
        Simon Maddrell, who is based in Brentford, commented, “I’m delighted that 
        we have all been given recognition for our work. Our main partner organisation 
        in Kenya has been driving development as a community group for an almost 
        unprecedented 25 years. I have been involved with them since 1984 and 
        am very proud to be given the opportunity to support their work, which 
        has transformed lives and landscapes.”
        
        Winners in the various categories included ex-Arsenal and Sunderland footballer 
        Niall Quinn, Zac Goldsmith, Sir John Paul Getty, Lord Bhatia of Hampton 
      and Dame Stephanie Shirley.
