The Wandsworth Volunteer Police Cadets held their first meeting on Wednesday, 29 November in Southfields Community College, 333, Merton Road, Southfields SW18 from 6.30pm to 9pm.
Young people aged between 14 to 19 years who, live, go to school, or work on the borough came along to learn about the cadet unit.
The aims of the police cadet programme are to encourage personal development of cadets by learning basic policing skills, life skills and promote citizenship. As a uniformed team able to help at non-confrontational police events and enhance the relationship between the police, the community and young people in the Borough.
The Unit will meet every Wednesday at Southfields Community College and will undertake training on subjects such as:
· First Aid
· Navigation and camp craft
· Personal safety
· Legislation and powers of arrest
· Justice system - how the Court system works and how to take a statement.
There will also be regular visits and training from guests attached to specialist police departments.
Police constable Ian Featherstone, Cadet Co-ordinator said, “We in Wandsworth are pleased to be able to join the other 30 Volunteer Police Cadet Units across the Metropolitan Police Area. I feel that this is a unique opportunity for young people to become involved in the community they live in, get an insight to police work and have the opportunity to take part in outward bound activities. We still have some vacancies on the unit and I would be pleased to hear from those that are interested. ”.
PC Featherstone can be contacted at Earlsfield Police Station on 020 8247 8910. Alternatively go on line at www.scotlandyard.police.uk/cadets
It is a great opportunity to learn about the police service and see whether you would like to pursue a career in that field and it allows the Metropolitan Police Service to form strong links with the adults of tomorrow.
