Woman assulted whilst walking her 10 month old baby

Wandsworth Robbery Squad are appealing for witnesses and information following a robbery in which a woman was assaulted whilst out walking her baby.

At approximately 11.30 on 24.3.05 the victim - a 39year old woman - had parked her car in Nicosia Rd, SW18 (near Baskerville Rd) and was walking down the alleyway leading to Wandsworth Common when she was approached by a man armed with a baseball bat.

The suspect asked for her mobile phone to which she replied that she did not have one. At this point he hit over the head with the bat. He then asked her a second time. Again she said that she did not have one and he hit her in the stomach. On the third occasion he asked her for money. She gave him her handbag. On searching it and discovering only items for the baby, the suspect then hit her over the head before running off towards the footbridge in the middle of the common.

The victim's 10-month-old son (in a pram) was unharmed during the incident.

The victim managed to drive home and alert police.

She was taken to a London hospital where she remains suffering from bruising and swelling to her face and arm.

The suspect is described as approximately 5'6" tall, of slim build, wearing a black woollen balaclava, a light camel coloured ribbed polo neck jumper, blue jeans and red and white trainers.

Investigating officer DC Stewart Peters said, "This was a particularly nasty attack which took place in broad daylight; made even more sickening by the fact that the victim was with her child at the time. There would have been a number of people in the area at this time of day - indeed many people use the alleyway as a short cut into the common. I would appeal for these people to come forward."
