dont play into the hands of muggers.
With
Wandsworth police actively hitting the streets to cut down on crime, they
would like to encourage the public to think about their own safety and
dont play into the hands of muggers.
Although victims can never blame themselves for being targeted, there
are simple steps you can follow to increase your safety.
Be careful displaying any expensive technology
muggers look for mobile phones, I-pods, laptops, minidisk players.
Be especially aware when exiting a tube/train station, you dont know
whos watching.
On your mobile phone, its a good idea to have emergency/ contact numbers
already programmed for easy accessibility.
When using cash machines, check your surroundings, is it safe to use?
If you are distracted, cancel your transaction and leave they may
have seen your PIN number.
Carry your bag slung across your body with any zips or openings on the
inside.
At nightStick to busy, well-lit places. Avoid underpasses or shortcuts
unless the lighting is good and you're confident they're safe.
If you have to travel alone, let people know where you are and how you
are getting home.
Dont use illegal minicabs it isnt worth the risk.
If you are travelling by train, use your instinct and get on carriage
with passengers you feel comfortable with.
If you feel youre being followed, cross over the road and keep walking.
Head for somewhere busy and dont be afraid to ask for help.
DI Jess Ruddell, said: I dont want to hype the fear of crime, I just
want people to be safe and aware that it can happen. With the festive
season looming, people will be out rightfully enjoying themselves and
we will be policing the streets to keep everything in order.
