Update on New Years shooting at a Wandsworth nightclub

Police repeat their appeal for witnesses

The Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a shooting in Wandsworth at approx. 03:45 [correct time] on 1/1/05, at Citizens Nightclub, High Street, Wandsworth.

Two women in their early 20s suffered gunshot wounds to their faces - one was shot through the cheek, and the other in the jaw.

They were taken to south London hospitals (we are not disclosing which). One of the women has been discharged and is recovering at home. The second woman remains in a stable condition in hospital.

The suspect is described as a slim, short dark-skinned black man, with either very short hair or a shaved head (age not known at present), who is believed to have been with a group of ten to twenty other black men.

They all made off after the shooting.

The gunman fired his shots whilst near the bar area, and the two women were at the bar. The women were innocent
by-standers, and not the intended targets.

It is believed there had earlier been an argument involving a number of black males by the bar area at the club, a short time before the shooting. The women were not involved in that argument.

It is not known whether this argument involved the group from which the gunman later emerged, or indeed if it has any bearing on the subsequent shooting. The Police state that they must retain an open mind re: any connection at this early stage - and need anyone with information on the argument to come forward.

An incident room has opened at Putney under detectives from Trident.

DS Gareth Rees said:

"The club was packed that night, with several hundred in attendance. It is only by chance that no-one suffered fatal injuries. We are appealing for anyone at the club that night, or who has any information on the shooting, to come forward.

"We also need to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of the club in the time before or after the shooting."

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8785 8580; if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestopers on 0800 555 111.

The nightclub is fully co-operating with inquiries.
