Volunteers Wanted by Marie Curie

Climb to the summit for cancer charity

Fancy climbing the highest mountain in Africa mountain to raise funds for charity?

Marie Curie Cancer Care is looking for very special volunteers. The charity wants people to join them on a 10-day trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise vital funds. They say the sponsorship money raised will allow more Marie Curie Nurses to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes.

The 10 day trip, with 6 days trekking, involves climbing via the Rangai route to the summit with views across the plains of Africa at 5895 metres high. Participants will benefit from expert tour guides, flights, tour costs, event crew, food, accommodation and transfers as well as a once in a lifetime experience and chance to make friends for life.

James Corbett, 32, from Kent and his friend Stuart Hanson raised over £8.5k for Marie Curie Cancer Care when they decided to “give something back” and sign up to the Trek in February 2011. James lost his grandfather to cancer and when Stuart lost his dad too they decided to take action and sign up to something that would focus and challenge them.

“At the top many cried and were overwhelmed at their achievement. It wasn’t until I got back and my daughter gave me a “well done” card that I got emotional, I realised I’d really done something that made people proud of me, including myself. It’s a priceless feeling of achievement and I’m hooked. I’m considering the Grand Canyon Trek in 2013 for Marie Curie. I’d do it all over again given the chance. I said I wanted to give something back to the charity and in the end I got more back than I’d bargained for.”

Dates for Trek Kilimanjaro are 12th July 2012 and 13th Feb 2013. Registration fee of £350 and a minimum sponsorship of £3,750. 10 day trip with 6 days trekking.
