A Photographic Odyssey: Shackleton's Endurance Expedition Captured on Camera

Shackleton's Endurance

There is a chance to learn more about Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 third Antarctic expedition on the ship Endurance through the lens of Frank Hurley, one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. Hurley accompanied Shackleton on this Expedition and through his photographs, Hurley gave a visual narrative to this epic journey which will be the subject of a talk by lecturer Mark Cottle.

Endurance was trapped and eventually crushed by the pack ice on this expedition. The crew camped on the ice for 5 months, they rowed to the remote Elephant Island and from there Shackleton sailed for help to South Georgia over 800 miles away returning to rescue his crew 3 months later. Hurley’s photographs captured new and amazing landscapes within which this remarkable human drama played out on essentially terra incognito.

Mark Cottle was born in the Scilly Isles, educated at Truro School in Cornwall and a graduate of Birmingham University with a Masters Degree in late Medieval History, Mark has spent over 30 years lecturing in Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and Tudor history in further and higher education. His approach is about bringing back a sense of the fascination with the richness, achievement and even mystery of a remarkable period in English history, with his own brand of enthusiasm, knowledge and skills as a communicator.
