In anticipation of December launch
The first Barclays Cycle Hire docking stations are now being installed in Wandsworth as the launch of the south west extension draws closer.
The first of around 60 docking stations are now in place, but are not yet operational. Most of the new docks are expected to 'go live' in December when local people will be able to start using the popular blue bikes. All docking station will be up and running by spring next year.
The docks are being spread out across parts of north Battersea, Wandsworth Town and Putney.
Leader of Wandsworth Council, Ravi Govindia, has been to inspect the new docking station on Podmore Road, opposite Wandsworth Town Railway Station.
He said: “We’ve been talking about bringing cycle hire to Wandsworth for years so it's fantastic to see the first docking stations on our streets. There are no bikes here yet but this shows that the planning stage is almost over and the north of our borough will soon be part of the Boris Bike zone.
“There’s real excitement about the scheme’s arrival and it will be a valuable new addition to our transport network. It’s a fast, fun, inexpensive and pollution free travel option that will help take some of the load off our buses, trains and tubes.
“Boris Bikes are also popular with tourists and we hope the south west extension will encourage more of London's visitors to explore Battersea, Wandsworth Town and Putney.”
