Huddersfield won 1-0 at Griffin Park on a Tuesday through a 92nd minute Peter Clarke goal.
Brentford had matched their opponents throughout the 90 minutes but Clarke struck in injury time after a half cleared Danny Cadamateri header.
The Bees had their moments in the game with Town keeper Smithies making a strong one handed stop from Weston's drive early in the second half.
A wonderful Brentford move in the first half ended when Adam Reed span on the edge of the box and fired narrowly wide but the Bees failed to regularly break down their well-organised opponents.
Late substitute Schlupp fired straight at Smithies after some neat footwork shortly after his 77th minute introduction to the game, but ultimately Huddersfield made some mild late pressure count.
"You win some, you lose some" as a fellow supporter said to me on the way out of Griffin Park this evening. We probably deserved a draw tonight but certainly didn't look outclassed by our promotion chasing opponents.
Bees - Lee, Woodman, Legge, Osborne, Kev, Byrne, Dave, Reed (Bean), Weston (Schlupp), Alexander, Grabban (Bignall)
Unused Bees - Moore, Spillane, Wright, OTJ
