Brentford came from a goal down to deservedly beat Peterborough in a pulsating game.
Ben Hamer made a terrific early save from Mackail-Smith in the first few minutes as Peterborough started the game well. The visitors had the better part of the game overrunning the bees on several occasions and were awarded a penalty on 19 minutes when a cross from the byline was handled by Spillane.
Grant McCann took the penalty which was well saved by Hamer to his right but a retake was ordered as the linesman declared that Hamer had moved off his line. McCann made no mistake with the retake.
From that point Brentford grew into the game and started to get the ball into more dangerous areas. The bees pressure finally told when a curling free kick from Craig Woodman passed by all the runners, the defenders and the keeper to nestle into the net.
Brentford finished the half strongly with Alexander forcing the Peterborough goalie into a superb save and Karleigh heading just wide.
In the second half Brentford controlled the game well with Kev taking the heat out of any Peterborough possession with some fine touches always finding a bees player and breaking up the opposition play. Sam Wood and Gary Alexander were constantly chasing down their defenders and not allowing them to build from the back. The second half saw the brisk wind into the opposition's faces so hoofing it up wasn't really an option for them, so Brentford's pressing play was proving successful.
Just before the hour Craig Woodman made a sweeping cross over to Wood who was storming up-field towards the Peterborough box and played a lovely cushioned header into the on-rushing Alexander with a half diving header in the net to put Brentford in the lead.
Alexander missed a sitter, had another good chance saved, Wood and Spillane could have got on the score sheet too after Brentford continued their rampant play.
This was an excellent performance after a slow first 20-25 minutes. Alexander, Kev and Wood were the pick of the bunch alongside Woodman's dead balls and crossing and Hamer's assured keeping.
Brentford: Hamer; Spillane, Legge, Osborne, Woodman; Wood, Bean, O'Connor, Weston; MacDonald (sub Grabban 62 mins), Alexander
Subs (not used): Lee, McCracken, Hunt, Diagouraga, Simpson, Forster
