The world-renowned Osterley Bookshop is closing …

But we’re staying put in the building to carry on our first love (Art) which is why we got the building in the first place (apart from wanting to save it from dereliction!)

Over the past year our commercial art has kept the` shop afloat – Osterleyites no longer read like they used to, increased bills, rates, wages, heat and, the last straw: parking, which killed non-locals popping in. Plus very few tourists who propped up the slow local sales, due to cost of N.T. entry underground etc. Why not go to a London museum rather than spend £100 to visit Osterley for a day?

To be blunt the shop is no longer fun. Of course we’re sad to say goodbye to all the people who’ve joined in this charade of our accidental making, but we can’t now afford to hang around being a decorative local attraction: We’ve stuff to do!

We need to get our Art Hats firmly back on, and rejoin the circus, as we’re no good at 9-5s or stressing about how to meet the next shop bill. We’ve no intention of returning to the starving in garrets artists as we, and our grubby hippy friends were when we 1st set foot in the building.

So it’s a farewell to Osterley Bookshop. Until December there will be a big, staggered, sell off of stock starting now with all hardbacks, 1sts, 2nds, you name it: HALF PRICE, until the last clear out with our usual September Sale.

Bulk buyers welcome, sales of £100+ get extra discounts, Wed, Thurs + Fridays.

Also, please note our new opening days are: Wednesday to Sundays inclusive.

However, if you are a true bibliophile and want to buy in bulk on non-opening days, try ringing 020 8560 6206 and if we can we’ll open up for you.

PS And when the Osterley bookshop owners say they are returning to their first love of art, they are being extremely modest about their artistic achievements. Co-owner Pennie Smith MBE (born in London) is an English photographer, known for her photography of the rock music industry. She specialises in black-and-white photography. One of her ionic photographs of Paul Simonon smashing his bass was used on a postage stamp. A wonderful interview in the Guardian from 2019 explains how that photo came about.

Easy parking (half hour free, and no charges on weekends). Only 10 mins by car and 15 by bus (H91) from Chiswick. Seven days a week 9.30-5-30. Situated in the old railway station opposite Osterley Park entrance, 168A Thornbury Road, Osterley, TW7 4QE. Tel: 020 8560 6206
