Thumbs Up For Jules

The independent brasserie in Lacy Road welcomed as a 'great addition' to Putney

Jules is a new independent brasserie in Lacy Road which serves tapas and small plates with a brunch menu at weekends. Always keen to support local independents (the chains can usually look after themselves), a group of us descended on a sultry June evening. We opted to sit at the high bar tables inside which conferred a degree of informality and fun. Or perhaps it was the excellent value bottles of rosé which contributed to the convivial atmosphere…

As there was a group of us, we opted for the charcuterie and the cheese platter to start. Both were delicious and were complemented by the curry toasted almonds (yum!) and bread and olives.

Rather than order individual small plates, we then each chose an item from the menu and thereby got a chance to sample a wide range of dishes, which are all Mediterranean-inspired. Sometimes the description didn’t do the food justice – I thought the ‘breaded cod with sautéed spinach and cashew’ sounded a little dull but the resulting fish was absolutely delicious as were the vegetable and prawn wonton. If you have appetite for a pudding, the affogato and ice-cream are heavenly.

The menu has plenty of clearly marked vegetarian options and many of the dishes can be made gluten-free on request. A special mention must go to the serving staff who were extremely helpful and welcoming despite having to deal with a large table and lots of questions. Jules is a great new addition to the Putney restaurant scene, with evidently a talented chef behind the scenes.
