Putney Home To World Cup Pizza Champion

Il Divo offers great pizza and more

Pizza is a popular choice in this family but there are some in the family who would like a different option and we not disappointed when we chanced upon Il Divo on the corner of Putney High Street and Weimar Street.

The welcome was warm in this long thin restaurant and, with a hot summer promised, it is nice that the doors can fold back offering pavement dining on Weimar Street. At first glance the menu seemed restrictive but in reality the restaurant offers diverse choice.

The decor is rustic with bare brick, and a mix of wooden & tiled floors. In the rear corner you can see the pizza chef creating the pizzas & garlic breads in the pizza oven. Other foods are cooked in the small basement kitchen.

For starters garlic pizza bread (£4.50) and a generously topped bruschetta pomodoro (£5) plus a Carpaccio di Manzo to chare (£10.50) were ordered - generous portions for all, my only criticism of the carpaccio was that there was too much oil in the mustard dressing which slightly drowned the tender melt in mouth beef.

Hidden in the sides section of the menu we discovered fresh oven baked Sea Bass (£15.50). A whole sea bass served with olives, a garnish and a side order of chips (£3.50). I opted for the South American sirloin steak (£16) which once again was melt in mouth and served with a green salad. The steak has been marinated and is served sliced in a rich jus. The obligatory pizza was ordered in the form of a Montanara, which includes; tomato, mozzarella, smoked Parma ham, smoked scamorza cheese and porcini (£10).

The pizza got the thumbs up - and so it should as pizza chef Marco Fuso won 'The Best World Pizza Champion' award in November 2013. Marco competes ever year and demands "only the purest of flours in the bases and the freshest most fragrant ingredients for the toppings".

The wine list is offers a choice of eight white and eight red wines (including house wines) plus a rosè and a prosecco - all Italian. Prices range from under £15 to £35.

The bill including a glass of wine, some Peroni beers and a lot of sparkling water. (Why don't restaurants offer large bottle of water?!) and coffee came to £104 excluding service for a family of four adults.
