Steak Out On Putney Bridge Road

Full house for Tuesday 'Special' @ The Putney Canteen

Last week I popped in for a quick coffee and the spacious dining area was buzzing - a hit with mums & little ones who are waiting the arrival of a soft play area downstairs. There is also a small seating area outside to enjoy the sunshine on Ampney Rd.

The Putney Canteen opened last month offering a American style menu from it's open kitchen. It's aim; to offer a welcome escape for a coffee (and naughty pastries & cakes) in the morning to lunch or take away sandwiches & supper in the evening.

Tempted by the Tuesday Night offer of 'Steak & Chips for £8' six of us met to catch up on the summer news at Putney's newest restaurant The Putney Canteen. Considering it was August and Putney residents tend to disappear, the restaurant was full bar one table! This did lead to slow service but the waitress was apologetic and friendly - my advice 'bring the wine bottle earlier', it keeps the customer happier & they may even end up ordering another!

Tuesday evening is steak night - you get cut of the day (flank this week) with house salad and chips and sauce of the day for £8. Other cuts are available ( 200g Rib-Eye steak £15, 200g Sirloin steak £15 (pictured above) or 250g Rump steak £14 all served with a field mushroom, tomato, chips & salad and the sauce of your choice). The majority of our group ordered the £8 deal and with advice from the waitress not to order rare as the steak could be too chewy due to the nature of the cut went for medium/rare.

We did not opt for the house wine (£13.95) but for the Argentinean Malbec (£21.50) which proved to be a wine best drunk with food rather than on its own. It certainly fared well with the steak arrived. The steaks were tasty and cooked as ordered and contrary to some comments the chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside - not one left on any 6 plates!

Only three of the party opted for desserts. Two went for the chocolate brownie sundae (all desserts are £5.50) which was apparently "gorgeous", the third a raspberry cheesecake did not appear which was probably a good thing for the waistlines of the ladies who were going to "share" and was probably due to the waitress being over stretched.

Tuesday night appears to have caught the restaurant out, the waitress told me that the day had been "dead" and the number of walk-ins had caught them by surprise. The feedback from my table was positive with comments such as "the steak was good and well cooked", "generous portions" & "well priced wine list" I will certainly visit again and looking at the Brunch menu which includes a 'Full English Breakfast' ( 2 free range eggs, 2 bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash brown & toast) with two prices; £8.50 or £11 with a Bloody Mary it may be a late Sunday morning for a lazy start to the day!

The owners are certainly trying to offer customers a variety of enticements with following weekly offers:
