A Sound Win Keeps Putney CC 2nd XI On Top

Saturday 2nd XI vs Whiteley Village

A very sound win at Whiteley sees the 2's stay top, 20 points ahead of the team in second. We've got there this season through solid all round performances and this win was typical.

We won the toss, atypically, and put them in. Piers made the breakthrough in his first over with booming inswing that troubled all the batsmen. Bowled, then caught at first then caught at second. Like John Fisher, they had little response and ceased to try to score off him hence his extraordinary 10-5-7-3. Lincoln bowled a full length and gave more to hit whilst stil being potent, downhill with the wind behind him.

They dawdled along at two and over. Sujith (4-0-25-1) troubled the two batsmen who put up any resistance but was himself troubled by no balls.

And just when they sought to accelerate, Fents took wickets (2-12)and we benefited from some panicky running between the wickets. 145 to win.

Mark (25) and Julian (17, big score due soon, surely) both played in the styles to which we've become accustomed. Murad (0) hoicked and so Sujith (33) and Pat (18, big score due....) rebuilt. Sujith hit the ball hard and in a classical style. Doug (22*) and Fents (11*) brought it home to quell any anxiety.

So, a great all round performance and we go into our last four league games with both (mixed metaphor alert) a bit up our sleeve and a decent cushion! Apparently Piers bats too!
