Good Win In Excellent Weather
Saturday 2nd XI vs Chobham
For those short on time a few take home points from the 2's weekend game away at Chobham:
1. Good win for the boys in some excellent weather (and thankfully a lovely dry pitch).
2. Subesinghe and Murad leading the way with bat and ball respectively.
Mr. Wibberley (the elevated respect that captaincy brings requires the formal treatment) got the boys of to a great start by winning the toss and sending in our opponents. JJ and Brian had first crack at the new rock. JJ (9/2/25/2) in particular had the batsmen jumping around and was duly rewarded with two wickets early on. Brian (7/0/24/0) was hitting good areas and was cruelly deprived of a wicket when the author grassed a sitter at square leg.
After the early wickets fell the opposition fell into a slumber and were prepared to crawl ahead at 2 or 3 an over for 15 or so overs. Rodney (5/0/23/0) and McGahan (8/3/27/0) bowled good areas and created a few chances but could not seem to come up with the breakthrough. That was of course until Murad crashed into the stumps of the remaining opener to set ball in motion again finishing with impressive figures of (16/6/29/5). Thereafter the new batsmen showed a bit more impetus than their predecessors but most were outclassed by Murad’s consistent lines and clever changes of pace.
Subesinghe (4/1/14/2), showing a bit of the magic touch that would light up Putney’s innings, came on to claim two useful wickets. Usman (3/0/5/0) came on close to the end for some clever death bowling and was also very unlucky not to end up with a wicket, deceiving their left hand batsmen with flight and guile. In the end the innings was declared closed at 9 for 149 of 52, leaving us 43 overs to chase down the total.
After a very enjoyable tea interval Mr. Wibberley (16) got the ball rolling with a few expansive drives before being bowled by a clever bit of bowling from Chobham’s young opener. Thereafter Julian was again done over by his biggest enemy, the number 7. Fenton also fell just after he looked to be settled, but not before he had unfurled a few stylish trademark cover drives. Subesinghe (64*) started off watchfully and had begun to hit his stride when Murad fell for three. This brought McGahan (19*) to the wicket with the score 4 for about 70 odd after 18. Subesinghe, despite issuing warnings about horizontal bat shots to the impressionable McGahan, proceeded to unleash a number of beautiful pulls and sweeps, as well as a couple of brutal straight drives. Such was his effectiveness that he was to hit 50 of the remaining 70 runs needed to win. In the end the total was achieved with approximately ten overs to spare, to make for a relatively easy win.
A good win for the lads and a welcome 20 points.
