The new restaurant ready for opening on 27 November
November 21, 2023
Mexican fast-food chain, Chipotle, has announced the launch date of its new outlet at 88-90 Putney High Street.
The ‘fast-casual’ restaurant will be holding its grand opening on Monday 27 November.
Chipotle, which also has 16 branches in London including Chiswick and Battersea, specialises in Mexican grill food - including burritos, tacos, salads and the new hand-crafted quesadilla . The restaurant will be just two doors down from the Putney branch of McDonalds.
On its first day, customers will receive free guacamole with a purchase of a salad, bowl, burrito, quesadilla or order of tacos.
“Given the rising popularity of Chipotle across London, our expansion in the area remains a top priority for our international strategy,” said Jacob Sumner, Director of European Operations. “This new location will increase the Putney community’s access to real, fresh food.”
Chipotle says that its food is cooked fresh daily with no freezers in its restaurants.
You will be able order in-restaurant from 11am to 11pm every day or place orders via the Chipotle app for mobile pick-up, or place a delivery order through a third-party delivery service like Uber Eats, Just Eat, or Deliveroo.
The Santander branch in Putney closed down in July 2021 and the building has remained vacant since then.
The chain was founded by Steve Ells on July 13, 1993, in Denver, Colorado and had 16 restaurants when the McDonald’s Corporation became a major investor. By the time McDonald’s sold its shares in 2006 there were 500 branches of Chipotle and it continued to expand to over 2,000 locations with 45,000 staff.
The first Chipotle restaurant in Europe was opened in London in 2010 but expansion in the UK stalled and the group had only seven restaurants in the capital by June 2015 with all but one of them in the City of London or the West End. The company had previously put the slow growth in the United Kingdom down to British unfamiliarity with Mexican foods although other chains with a similar offering have expanded here during that period. More recently it has embarked on an expansion drive in the UK with a number of openings in recent years particularly in the London area.
