the Council rejects plans for 15 storey development
The council has rejected plans for four new buildings up to fifteen storeys in height on the site of Tileman House in Putney. The redevelopment proposals were considered by the planning applications committee on August 20.
The applicant wanted to demolish the existing seven and nine-storey blocks on the site. They would be replaced by three linked blocks of eight, twelve and fifteen storeys on the Upper Richmond Road frontage with another ten-storey block at the rear.
The new scheme would provide 89 flats and 1600 square metres of office accommodation with space for shops and restaurants on the ground and first floors.
The developer’s proposals had attracted more than 200 objections with most people concerned about the height of the new buildings.
Planning applications chairman Leslie McDonnell said:
“At fifteen storeys the main block would be higher than any other development in the area. The proposed scheme would also sit uncomfortably alongside the existing buildings in Upper Richmond Road.
“The committee accepted the principle of development at this location. The existing buildings are unattractive, offering outdated office accommodation and contributing little to the street scene. However if a scheme is to work here it needs to better reflect the heights of the existing buildings in this part of Putney."
