Offering easier access for residents east of the High Street
Putney councillors have stepped up their campaign to get a second entrance for Putney mainline station, by writing to the chairman of Network Rail and urging him to cut through red tape and give the project the go-ahead.
Councillors from Thamesfield and East Putney, supported by local MP Justine Greening, have constantly pressed the case for a second entrance, preferably in Oxford Road, to relieve congestion in the station – one of the busiest stations on the rail network – and to provide a link-up for commuters from East Putney Tube station. And Wandsworth Council has already commissioned and paid for a feasibility study which supports the case for a second entrance.
Thamesfield Councillor Rosemary Torrington, who is chairman of the Wandsworth Passenger Transport Liaison Group, commented:
"A second entrance at Putney station would help to alleviate congestion at peak time, offer easier access for residents living east of the station, facilitate the interchange with the Tube at East Putney station and help to regenerate Upper Richmond Road."
Councillor Rob Morritt from East Putney said:"As the independent study clearly shows, a new entrance from Oxford Road is possible and can ease overcrowding. Local people pay a fortune in rail and Tube fares that only ever seem to go up. It’s about time some of that money was reinvested locally to help ease the overcrowding."
