Assembly Member Proposes "Green Wall" For Putney

Planting proposed to combat poor local air quality

Richard Tracey has written to Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's Environmental Advisor requesting that they look into a 'Green Wall' similar to that on Edgware Rd in an attempt to clean up the air in Putney.

He told Kulveer Ranger:
"There is a constant debate about the level of pollution here. Putney Society, Wandsworth Council and Putney councillors are in regular contact. They have asked me about insisting on low emission or hydrogen buses on this route, and also about TfL moving Putney Bus Garage which is just off the High Street.
Your recent opening of the "Green Wall" in Edgware has aroused interest and questions whether you could do the same here.

In November Kulveer Ranger (pictured above) opened a 'green wall' on the heavily polluted Edgware Rd - the 200 sq metre wall is visually stunning and took just a month to install. As well as having practical environmental benefits, is an attractive leafy addition to Marylebone Road. It features a total of 15 plant varieties crafted into a multi-coloured and patterned design. Studies across Europe and the USA have shown the potential of vegetation, including trees and plants, to trap PM 10. The air quality benefits of this wall will be monitored by scientists from Imperial College London.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Delivering cleaner air for London is a top priority for me and this ingenious green wall traps harmful pollution on one of our busiest roads, helping to cleanse the air at this popular spot as well as helping to soften and beautify the local environment.”
