Residents gathering in an attempt to save threatened children's centre
Residents campaigning about the closure of the Alton Activity Centre have organised a protests outside the centre at 2pm on Sunday 24th January. The campaign is focused on the vital council meeting on Thursday 11 February and the campaigners plan to attend the meeting in numbers that evening.
The full address is Ellisfield Drive (enter estate via Danebury Avenue), SW15 4DR.
Alton Activity Centre is located within the Roehampton Regeneration Area. At the Council meeting on 9 December the Council voted to cut the staffing and funding of this Centre as part of a £1.4m spending reduction for ‘Early Years’ services.
Commenting on the campaign Cllr Kathy Tracey said,“There has been some scaremongering about this issue which is doing nothing but causing local families needless worry and concern. What’s happening here is the contact with Spurgeons is coming to an end. From April we will be working with local schools, charities and voluntary groups with the aim of providing a wide range of child and family friendly services at the centre.”
The official campaign, 'Save Our Alton Activity Centre' has a new facebook page.
