New games area at Witley Point part of Alton Estate redevelopment
Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Jane Cooper, with local children who helped with the design
Aa multi-use games area (“MUGA”) at Witley Point has been given a £250,000 makeover as part of the Alton regeneration
The Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Jane Cooper, hosted the reopening in Roehampton and children from Heathmere School were invited to a socially-distanced opening event featuring mural painting, daffodil painting and the construction of a bug hotel to encourage wildlife.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Deputy Leader Cllr Kim Caddy said: “This opening demonstrates regeneration is about more than just housing.
“Our plans for Alton will also deliver new community facilities, a new library, youth centre, GP surgeries, children's centre, children's nursery, community hall and shops and businesses space. However, regeneration is ultimately about people as well as buildings. Whilst this scheme will transform the lives of those that move into new homes, the wider community will benefit from the new jobs and training opportunities.”
Children from Heathmere School, the Roehampton Base and Chelsea Kicks played a role in designing the new facility, and even created their own designs out of polystyrene and modelling clay.
Although it was not possible to incorporate a swimming pool or petting zoo within the final design, council officers were able to include bicycle storage, an inground trampoline, higher fencing and monkey bars.
The new facility also includes a resurfaced pitch, a graffiti wall and slides.
