Charity Cricket Tournament In Memory Of Emlyn Wibberley

Putney Cricket Club raised £382.87 for Cardiac Risk In The Young (CRY)

The money was raised from members of Putney Cricket Club at a 7-a-side intra-club cricket tournament held on Saturday 4th September 2010 on Putney Lower Common.

14½ year old Emlyn was walking from his home in Dover House Road to the bus stop to catch his bus to Christs' school as usual on the morning of 9th June 2010.  He suddenly and unexpectedly collapsed and died despite the valiant efforts of a passing off-duty policeman, members of the public, attending paramedics and doctors.

The inquest was at the Westminster Coroners Court on Wednesday 1st September where it was confirmed that he had a ‘sudden arrhythmic cardiac death’.

His death came out of the blue and has shocked all his family and friends. Emlyn was big and strong for his age.  He was 1.87m tall and weighed about 85kg, known by his friends as the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) due to his kind and gentle nature. He is very much missed by his family and school friends both at Christs' and All Saints' Primary School by Putney Common.

Westminster Coroner’s Court recorded Emlyn’s cause of death as sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a verdict given when no definite cause of death can be found, even after an expert examination of the heart.

Michael Ashworth, consultant paediatric pathologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, said there were no abnormalities with the teenager’s heart. He explained at the Coroners Court that an abnormal heart rhythm would have caused a lack of oxygen to the brain, leading to the initial collapse, and the arrhythmia would have worsened as Emlyn became further deprived of air. He said: “He would have been unconscious immediately and wouldn’t have known about it.”

His cricket playing father has created a Virgin Money Giving web page with the aim is to raise as much money as possible to be donated to Cardiac Risk In the Young.  Ideally we would like to have all teenagers' hearts tested and screened to check for any potential problems before it is too late.
