Volunteers reported a great response on race day
The STOPtheSHAFT Putney & Barnes campaign group were out in force at the Boat Race on Saturday, promoting awareness of the potential plight of Barn Elms playing fields, the towpath and river activities, if Thames Water’s plans to use this Greenfield area as a seven-year construction site for their sewage tunnel go ahead.
The stand was a jolly sight, with banners, leaflets, T-shirts and balloons and there was lots of interest from the crowds. More petition signatures were collected and money donated to the cause, although shockingly there are still a lot of people who are not aware of this proposal and also many who mistakenly think the decision has been overturned!
Thames Water are considering alternative Brownfield sites such as
Carnwath Road after pressure placed on them by local residents, however their final decision has not yet been made. Your support is needed and the campaign must go on! Further information can be found at www.stoptheshaft.org
STS sends big thanks to the Ranelagh Sailing Club for letting them host the stand outside their clubhouse on the Embankment and supporting the cause, along with many other rowers and sailors in the area.
