A new chamber opera by composer Edward Lambert will be performed at St Margaret’s Church, Putney Park Lane, on Wednesday 1 October at 3pm. Titled The Rapture, the work is described as a protest piece exploring the influence of apocalyptic prophecy narratives on contemporary conflict, specifically addressing the genocide in Gaza.
The performance is part of Lambert’s ongoing work with The Music Troupe, a company he founded in 2013 to present new, small-scale music dramas. Known for tackling complex themes through contemporary operatic forms, Lambert has previously staged works such as The Burning Question, Apollo’s Mission, and The Duchess of Padua, often blending literary adaptation with political commentary.
Lambert’s career spans decades, including roles at the Royal Opera House and international festivals. His compositions have been performed at venues across the UK and abroad, and he remains committed to creating accessible, thought-provoking music theatre.
The venue, St Margaret’s Church in West Putney, has become a regular host for community arts and reflective programming. Originally built as Granard Chapel in the 19th century, the church has evolved into a welcoming space for worship, dialogue, and cultural events. It offers regular services and outreach activities, including concerts, workshops, and social gatherings.
The Rapture will be presented as a relaxed performance with free admission and no ticketing required. The event is part of the church’s broader commitment to inclusive programming and community engagement.
