An opportunity for residents to come together again after lockdown
The event grew out of community efforts to deal with the pandemic
Roehampton Community Week is taking place from Monday 5 and Sunday 11 July 2021.
The organisers promise a series of exciting, collaborative activities, aimed at residents of Roehampton and West Putney, delivered by the community, for the community.
Events include a Film History of Roehampton, self-defence classes, dance workshops and discussions on art as well as a football and basketball tournament.
The idea of Roehampton Community Week was conceived after discussions within the Roehampton Response Network, a group of over 70 community stakeholders, including eight different council teams, originally assembled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roehampton Community Week is being seen as an opportunity for local residents and organisations to get out and come together, after the constraints and isolation of lockdown.
Jonathan Palma of Citizens Advice Wandsworth believes the event will “showcase Roehampton”. They both hope that activities during Roehampton Community Week will empower, educate and encourage individuals as well as build new and strengthen existing relationships between communities and organisations.
Funding for the activities on offer has come from a number of donors. Michael Hill of Rackets Cubed says that local groups have made not only substantial monetary contributions but have offered their time, labour and space. Support includes use of theatre facilities for performances and volunteers to help with litter-picking.
