The Roehampton Garden Society will hold its popular Autumn Show on Saturday 30 August, from 3pm to 5pm, at St Margaret’s Church, Putney Park Lane, SW15 5HU.
This vibrant community event showcases the best of local allotment-grown produce, with a colourful array of vegetables, fruits, and flowers cultivated by members across Roehampton’s historic plots.
Visitors can browse a produce stall offering homegrown plants, seasonal crops, and homemade jams and chutneys. Tea and homemade cakes will be served throughout the afternoon, and at 4.30pm, an auction of exhibits will give attendees the chance to take home some of the show’s finest entries.
Entry is by donation, and the venue is fully wheelchair accessible, ensuring an inclusive welcome for all.
Founded in the early 20th century, the Roehampton Garden Society traces its roots to the Garden City movement and the post-WWI “Homes for Heroes” initiative. The Dover House Estate, where many of the society’s allotments are located, was designed to include green spaces for food growing. The society’s early years were shaped by Richard Sudell, a Quaker plantsman and garden writer who established training allotments and offered lessons to new gardeners. Meetings were originally held in the basement of St Margaret’s Church, making this year’s show a return to the society’s spiritual home.
The Roehampton Garden Society has long been a cornerstone of local horticultural life, promoting sustainable growing, community engagement, and the joy of gardening.
The Autumn Show is not only a celebration of seasonal abundance but a tribute to a century of green-fingered tradition.
