Karl Jenkins pictured right, came to speak to Putney Music on Monday evening. He was interviewed by Robert Philip, who skilfully, with gentle prompting, coaxed out Karl’s life story.

We started listening to the wild exuberance of ’Adiemus‘, with its raw sound of Peruvian ‘Music of the mountains’ and African tribal music, enveloping our senses. We heard the ‘Benedictus’ with its hauntingly beautiful melody - an excerpt from his ‘The Armed Man’, that had been commissioned for the Millennium.

It was an interesting evening demonstrating how technology may be used to produce sounds that please the ear in highly complex ways.

Maybe, in this troubled world of ours, we need such music to touch the emotions and stir the soul and, as Karl said,
‘A reminder that we are are one world and one people’. We ended the evening listening to ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’.

The guest speaker on Monday March 19th 2012 at 8.00pm is Kevin O’ Hare, former dancer and Administrative Director of the Royal Ballet.
