Putney High School’s report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate

The quality of pupils’ personal development at Putney High School is ‘outstanding’, according to independent school inspectors. The Independent Schools Inspectorate praises strong leadership, excellent academic results, strong pastoral care and the extra-curricular opportunities at Putney.

Their report – which follows an interim inspection of the school - states: “Pupils are friendly and they enjoy excellent relationships, both with one another and with their teachers.” Inspectors found that parents were greatly satisfied with the quality of education provided, and the pastoral care of their children.

Headmistress Dr Denise Lodge said: “We are delighted with the findings of the ISI inspection. This hugely positive report is testament to the dedication, talent and professionalism of our staff and governors, and their commitment to securing the best for every one of our girls.”

Inspectors said: “The extra curricular activities programme provides a wide range of opportunities, enthusiastically received by pupils and enriched by visiting speakers and a diverse range of trips and visits.”

Their report also states:

  • Pupils make good progress over time in relation to their ability.
  • A strong focus on pastoral care supports the spiritual, moral, cultural and social development of girls. The school enjoys close links with parents and the community.
  • Girls feel there is always someone to whom they can turn to discuss their concerns.

Inspectors recommend that the school continues its good work to extend the provision for ICT and monitors the consistency of provision for all ability needs to ensure all departments reach the high standard of the best.

The report also found that the effectiveness of the Early Years Foundation Stage (reception) was good, with pupils demonstrating “excellent progress in writing, reading and most aspects of numeracy. Their skills in ICT are particularly strong.”

Inspectors make two recommendations for the Foundation stage, including further developing self-evaluation processes and improving staff understanding of the curriculum, focusing on planning and assessing learning experiences.

Mrs Jane Stevens, Head of Putney High School Junior Department, said, “We welcome this advice and have already taken steps to improve our knowledge and self-evaluation processes. My EYFS team is further developing our assessment of girls’ learning experiences.”

The ISI inspection system is fully supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and OFSTED. It enables parents to have confidence in independent schools, supporting them in their drive for greater excellence.
