Leonard Bernstein’s and Stephen Sondheim’s classic re-telling of Romeo & Juliet
Putney Light Operatic Society are to perform Leonard Bernstein’s and Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story.
Set in the working-class Upper West Side neighbourhood of New York in the mid-1950s, it explores the violent rivalry between two street gangs: the Jets, white New Yorkers and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants.
Tony, a former Jet and best friend of their leader Riff, falls in love with Maria, the younger sister of the Sharks’ leader, Bernardo. Prejudice and pride fuel a gritty violence which ultimately ends in tragedy.
You can catch performances from Tuesday 29 May through to Saturday 2 June with a matinee performance on the Saturday.
