68 local artists exhibit their work in Putney homes & studios in October
Wandsworth Artists’ Open House returns in October, with over half of the participating artists based in Putney. For art buyers this is an inviting and sociable way to meet an array of local talent, and buy direct.
36 artists’ doors in Putney alone will open to the public from Saturday, 3 October. This represents around half of all venues expected to take part throughout the borough. With 36 Putney addresses representing 68 artists, visitors can take in an impressive diversity of art without leaving the area. Putney Artists will show 10 categories of art including paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, sculpture, jewellery and ceramics. Prices range from £20 up to £10,000, with most under £350. Entry is free.
15,000 Putney Artists’ trail maps will be distributed throughout Putney in September. The trail map gives a concise description and address for each participating artist. Pick up a map locally, or download the PDF from the dedicated Artists’ Open House page on the Putney Artists’ website www.putneyartists.org/openhouse.
Ricky Leaver, photographer and Putney Artists’ chairperson, commented: “SW15 has an abundant seam of creative talent covering every artistic discipline. We are proud to represent the largest group in the borough, and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors this October. 68 artists from Putney is a record in our 12 year association with Wandsworth Artists’ Open House. Each year we are told by visitors that it is the perfect way to see and buy art. I highly recommend visiting as many of the 36 Putney venues as possible over the four open days”.
Printmaker Hilary Hayton, and former creator, producer, director of Crystal Tipps & Alastair, returns to Artists’ Open House this year. Hilary will be exhibiting at Putney School of Art and Design. The art school is a longstanding supporter of Putney Artists, and a newcomer as a Putney venue for the Artists’ Open House.
Proving the quality and popularity of the event, notable and established Putney Artists have consistently participated for many years including stalwart Margaret Knott. Margaret founded the original Artists’ Open House 12 years ago, in collaboration with the Friends of Putney School of Art and Design. Printmaker, Tammy Mackay is a long time regular at Artists’ Open House and currently exhibiting in the RA Summer Exhibition. Sophie Marsham, a sculptor using found objects and reclaimed materials (see left), recently commissioned to create a permanent sculpture of Bradley Wiggins, returns in 2015 for a sixth year.
Of the 68 artists, 20 are newcomers to the Putney Artists group in 2015, five of whom will show their work at Will’s Art Warehouse. See galleries at putneyartists.org/links.
All 36 Putney venues will open on 3 and 4 October from 11am to 6pm. Most will also open for the second weekend on 10 and 11 October, from 11am to 6pm. Before setting out, check open dates and access details for each venue at putneyartists.org/openhouse.
Now a familiar and much loved sight in SW15, five purple bikes distributing the Putney Artists’ trail maps will appear throughout Putney in September
