A rare chance to see local architectural gems this weekend
Two local buildings of architectural merit will be providing increased access to the general public this weekend.
Brandlehow Primary School and the National Tennis Centre are opening their doors as part of the Open House London weekend.
Brandlehow Primary School contains a series of extensions to a listed modern school by Erno Goldfinger formed from prefabricated timber elements clad with cedar boards. These can be viewed for free on Saturday 21st September between 10am to 4pm.
The National Tennis Centre Sports Canopy is the world's first composite demountable air-beamcanopy, spanning 42m, to support player training and development on the Centre's clay courts. Timeless nature of the arched form provides an inspirational and 'clutter free' playing environment attuned to players' needs. It is the ICE Award Winner and British Construction Industry Project of the Year 2011. You can view it on Saturday 21st September from 10am-to-5pm at 100 Priory Lane, Roehampton, SW15 5JQ,
The events are organised by London Open House, an architectural education charity which has four principal objectives:
• To foster public awareness and understanding of London's built environment and architecture by means of direct access, experience and debate.
• To promote an understanding of architecture and the public environment across all sections of the community, particularly with children and young people
• To encourage civic pride amongst the capital's residential and business community
• To promote visual literacy and citizenship through the medium of architectural appreciation and understanding.
