New Chamber Music at St Mary’s

17th February - Music for wind quintet by London composers

Last year, London Composers Forum chose Putney-based composer, Cedric Peachey, as their new Chair. Founded in 1995, London Composers Forum (LCF) brings together the talents of over thirty composers of varying backgrounds and musical styles based in and around London. LCF has particularly strong links with Putney, having presented several lunchtime concerts at St Mary’s Parish Church. In 2012, LCF collaborated with Putney Writers’ Circle and other partners in Cool Fusion, a multi-media event performed in venues across London, including Putney, as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

A month ago, LCF was privileged to have two distinguished composers with international reputations accept the roles of Honorary Patrons: Judith Weir CBE, Master of the Queen’s Music and David Matthews. To mark their arrival, London Composers Forum is returning to Putney with a major concert and has joined forces with the London Myriad Ensemble in presenting music for chamber wind ensemble at St Mary’s Parish Church at 7.00pm on Friday 17th February 2017.

Founded as a professional chamber group in 2004, the London Myriad Ensemble perform regularly in the UK and abroad. As first prize International Competition winners in 2009, they performed at the Purcell Room in the Southbank Centre and live on BBC Radio 3. The Ensemble have also performed at notable venues including St. Martin-in-the-Fields, St. James's Piccadilly, the Fairfield Halls and the National Portrait Gallery. Led by Julie Groves, an award-winning flautist in her own right, the Ensemble have an impressively wide repertoire, with a wind quartet as its core which expands to a quintet and to further combinations as required.

For this concert, ten members of London Composers Forum have contributed pieces for wind trio and wind quintet, many of which have their première. The music ranges from jazz-inspired through to pastoral, humorous, festive and elegiac in character - a cross-section of the creative mix that makes LCF a vibrant group for contemporary classical music in the capital. The programme includes two new works by Cedric Peachey.

‘MOSAIC’ promises to be an exceptional evening with a wealth of pieces to savour and enjoy, bringing together the superb musicianship of the London Myriad Ensemble and the colourful, lively music of some of London’s most imaginative composers.

Putney Kitchen, which adjoins St Mary’s Parish Church, have agreed to extend their opening to 7.00pm on the day so refreshments, drinks and light meals will be available before the concert.
