Speranza String Quartet To Perform at Next Putney Knitting Concert

Music by Mozart and Schumann at All Saints' Church

The next Putney Knitting concert is on Sunday, 1 March, 4pm at All Saints’ Church on Putney Common.

What a lovely way to start the 2020 concerts with two true pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire: Mozart's C major string quartet, the last of the six quartets he dedicated to his mentor Haydn and notorious for the bizarre and provocative harmonies in the introduction to the first movement; and Schumann's exuberant and life-affirming piano quintet full of fabulous tunes and infectious rhythmic vitality. Come. wallow and effortlessly succumb to two great composers at the height of their powers.

And also so lovely to welcome the Speranza Quartet to Putney: based in Hampshire and regular visitors to venues and festivals around Britain as far-flung as Anglesey and beyond; this is their Putney debut. Their second violin, Sue Bint, is a fellow ABRSM examiner and put together a concert last month which raised money for Bloodwise in honour of her brother who died in his early 20s from leukaemia. I guess I admired her pluck in doing this, and quite understood why it might have taken her 30 years or so to find the presence of mind to do so, and felt that one way to support this was to invite them to re-run the programme and hopefully raise a bit more money for a hugely worthy cause.

And by all means bring something quiet to do whilst you listen if you want to.
