Music by Bach, Ligeti and Ravel on 23rd April
|
The 2017 Knitting Concerts | Sunday 23rd April at 7pm
Leo Melvin (cello)
with William Melvin (violin)
Bach - Cello Suite no.3 in C major, BWV 1009
Ligeti - Sonata for solo cello
Ravel - Sonata for violin and cello
A warm welcome back to the Melvin brothers who have been playing at the Knitting Concerts since their teens giving listeners a chance to marvel at their musical development. This year Leo is heading the programme with two unaccompanied works: the third of the six cello suites by Bach and Ligeti's fascinating solo sonata written in the early 1950s but banned from publication by the Hungarian authorities for many years. If you remember the Piano Studies Robert Bridge played a few years ago you will know that Ligeti is a composer who can put both performer and listener on the edge of their seats, so expect some fireworks! And then to follow the Ravel Duo Sonata, one of the outstanding works for this combination of instruments.
As ever the concert is free with complimentary wine and soft drinks and you are invited to bring something (not too noisy!) to do whilst you listen if you want to. If you are concerned that you might disturb your neighbours - for example, by clicking knitting needles, or sucking teeth whilst pondering a particularly abstruse crossword clue - then please explore the side aisles which are also nearer the wall heaters. Many thanks.
The proceeds from the retiring collection will go to Starlight, a charity that helps to brighten the lives of children with terminal illnesses. Their website is at https://www.starlight.org.uk/
The March knitting concert raised £520 which was shared between the Alzheimer's Society and Medical Detection Dogs
There is now a dedicated Facebook page at the Putney Knitting Concerts where you can follow the latest news and also post your comments.
