Cello Sonatas by Shostakovich and Beethoven

First Putney Knitting Concert of the year welcomes back Alison Moncrieff-Kelly

As the Knitting Concerts move into their 12th year they kick off with a programme of cello sonatas by Shostakovich and Beethoven. Two very different but equally fabulous works up for grabs here. Shostakovich composed his only cello sonata in 1934, hotfoot from a tempestuous affair with student and during a temporary divorce from his wife. It is a piece of many sides, passionate, lyrical, frenzied and, at times, quite mad. Beethoven's A major sonata is the third of his five sonatas and deservedly popular, playful and virtuosic, as much fun to listen to as it is to play.

They also welcome back the cellist Alison Moncrieff-Kelly who last played at the Knitting Concerts in 2009. She remains ever busy as recitalist, teacher and examiner in this country and abroad and appears looking seasonally windswept on the poster which is attached to this email.

As ever the concert is free with complimentary wine and soft drinks and you are invited to bring something (not too noisy!) to do whilst you listen if you want to.

The proceeds from the retiring collection will go to the Hospice in the Weald, a hospice serving communities in Kent and providing both inpatient and outreach services and providing really excellent care and support.
