The Group 64 production of ‘Socialism is Great’ is chosen for National Theatre Connections
Group 64 are thrilled to have been chosen to perform at the National Theatre as part of the Connections Programme. The play Socialism is Great is an exciting challenge for the young cast and crew as they bring to life a powerful script that explores China’s youth, whilst inviting the audience to engage with the complex, fascinating and difficult history of the Cultural Revolution.
Group 64 have already performed the play to delighted audiences at Putney Arts Theatre and the Lyric Hammersmith. The writer Anders Lustgarten attended a performance and was impressed with the maturity and focus the young cast used to develop and bring his script to life. Director Nicola Sterry says “Directing this play was a wonderful challenge, not only in understanding China’s history, but portraying the realities for Chinese young people today. We are so excited by the response so far and can’t wait for our opportunity to perform on the Cottesloe stage at the National Theatre’

Now ten companies have been selected to bring their productions to the NT.
Socialism Is Great by Anders Lustgarten
Revolutionary China is contrasted with the current Republic. While their parents celebrated Socialism in the streets, today's children leave their homes, adopt false identities and sell iPhones on the black market. A passionate political play about ideals and realities.
