In the Time and Leisure magazine Food and Drinks Awards.
People in Putney and South West London have voted in large numbers for the community initiative for “connecting producers with customers, building that vital link in the food chain.”
Floriane Malot collects the award
The Food Assembly is an initiative that empowers people to shorten the food chain. Customers order food online from local producers before picking their order up at a weekly collection. Putney Food Assembly has over 600 members buying local, seasonal and environmentally friendly food and drinks from 25 different local producers.
Putney Food Assembly is run by Floriane Malot and her team, they started this local food community because they wanted a place to find the most local and fresh products whilst cutting out the number of intermediates in the supply chain.
With the Food Assembly model, food producers get over 80% for every product sold, compared to the 15%-25% that most supermarkets offer them. All products being pre-ordered, there is no food wasted as only what is ordered gets harvested, prepared and delivered.
Boasting the low average of 23 miles in food miles, it is also less impactful on the environment, and encourages less packaging (less travel means less need for packaging).
“We have amazing producers supplying us in Putney, with both amazing food and great ethics, and many of them are super local. As an example, ChicP is based in Fulham and makes colourful and tasty hummus from surplus vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. My Pop-Up Kitchen, in Wandsworth, provides us with amazing curry pastes and gives a good part of their profit back to Vision Rescue, a Mumbai-based charity.” says Floriane.
A Tasting Extravaganza and Celebration of the award will take place on Thursday 10th November, from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Duke's Head Putney, home of Putney Food Assembly. More details about the event will be found on facebook.com/putneyfoodassembly.
The team is working on opening a second Food Assembly, in Fulham, and they hope to open before Christmas, so people can benefit from such great food on both sides of the Thames.
