Meet the candidates who are hoping for your vote on May 7

Britain's 2015 General Election campaign is underway, and in the constituency of Putney, the following six candidates are hoping to become your next local MP.

The candidates in alphabetical order are:

Sheila Mary BOSWELL - Labour Party

Sheila Mary BOSWELL - Labour Party
Over the last 20 years, at work and in politics, I have developed a firm understanding of the role of community leadership. Campaigning for and ensuring the delivery of public services – including health and social care, the criminal justice system, immigration, education, local government and welfare reform. If elected as your MP I will work hard to ensure that the regeneration in our area creates employment opportunities, supports business – particularly small independent businesses, improving the environment and building new affordable homes. All this will be at the top of my agenda.

If elected MP for Putney, Roehampton & Southfields I will :

  • Ensure on-going inward investment bringing jobs and job security.
  • Work closely with local schools, colleges and local businesses to improve opportunities for young people.
  • Vote to abolish zero hour contracts that fail to provide secure income for families.
  • Ensure the survival of children centres and extend Sure Start by 50,000 places nationally.
  • End the hated and cruel bedroom tax.
  • Protect local healthcare – with more medical centres and GPs locally and secure the future of Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton.

    As a campaigner I have:
    * Fought the cuts to our local Parks Police working with community groups forced the council to rethink, saving several long serving officers jobs.
    * Central to the successful fight to save York Gardens Library. Making the powerful & successful case that stopped the closure.
    * Created & lead a successful campaign for a safer, alternative traffic calming scheme which puts residents, cyclists, pedestrians, school children & the elderly first in my local area.
    * Brought back Free Swimming for 5-16yr olds, over 5,000 children swam for free at Wandsworth’s Leisure Centres.

Justine GREENING Conservative Party

Justine Greening lives in West Hill in Putney. Born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Justine attended her local comprehensive school, before studying economics at Southampton University. She has an MBA from the London Business School and used to work in business. Justine was first elected as the MP for Putney, Roehampton and Southfields in May 2005.

Locally, Justine has campaigned on concerns on extra aircraft noise and the Thames Tunnel main drive shaft proposed for Barn Elms, fought for the investment we need in our local transport and is working to make sure regeneration in Roehampton has the biggest possible impact for local people and that Southfields Village is improved. Alongside that she has dealt with casework for over 20,000 local constituents and has a regularly MP surgery so that she is around for residents to meet up with face to face.

Following the Election in May 2010, Justine was appointed as the Economic Secretary to the Treasury within the Coalition Government. In October 2011, Justine was then appointed to the role of Secretary of State for Transport.

In September 2012, Justine was appointed by the Prime Minister, David Cameron, to the role of Secretary of State for International Development. In that role she has led the UK's efforts in Sierra Leone to combat ebola and our country's humanitarian response in places such as the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. Justine has put improving the lives of women and girls at the heart of the UK's international development approach. Justine held the first ever Girl Summit in London last year to mobilise international work to combat FGM and early and forced marriage, with young people at the centre of this work.

Andrew James HALLETT (Andy) Liberal Democrats

Andrew James HALLETT (Andy) Liberal Democrats

Andy was born in Crewe in Cheshire as the second of two children. He went to local state schools and became drawn to liberalism initially because of Charles Kennedy and the Lib Dem stance on the Iraq war. Moving to London as a student at the LSE solidified his views as he met a whole new world of people and ideas worth exploring.

After graduating he put his political ideals into practice by working for a consumer rights body. He has campaigned for the Lib Dems both at the centre, including an internship in the Westminster Policy and Research Unit, and on the doorsteps and streets. This included standing for local election in May 2014 in Tower Hamlets, receiving many more votes than anticipated in a highly challenging ward & borough.

Andy is a passionate advocate for, in particular, equality of opportunity and civil liberties. He also believes that there has never been a better time to make the case for liberalism and that we must stake our claim to the centre ground and not be defined by our political opponents. He sees his generation as the most liberal in British history and so providing great potential for the future of the Party.

As a first time Parliamentary candidate, Andy’s priorities for Putney include the redevelopment of Roehampton town centre, transport and sustainable development generally. He wants as many people as possible to benefit from a booming London and a swelling, often international, population in the constituency. As part of “generation rent” he is particularly keen to increase housing supply and find ways to regulate the housing market more fairly. He also intends to lead teams of Putney volunteers to help in our current MPs’ seats across London and further afield.
