Award winning Putney Landlady moves on from North Pole to China
The Landlady of The Bricklayer’s Arms , who last year ran 26.2 miles across one of the most remote and inhospitable environments on Earth - The Geographic North Pole is taking on another extreme marathon next month. Instead of facing down the freezing arctic cold, she'll be up against the sweltering heat and high altitude of the Great Wall of China!
Becky Newman, 45, took part in the North Pole marathon last year in memory of her sister, Helen, who died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage in 2005. Becky raised over £10,000.00 for the brain injury charity, Headway South West’s monthly support group www.headwayswlondon.org which aims to provide information, advice and support to people affected by brain injuries as well as support for their carers, family and friends. Becky was nominated by the charity for their ‘Fund-raiser of the Year’ (of which she was runner-up) and she also took on the role of a trustee.
On May 18th Becky will be taking part in one of the most revered marathons on the planet - the Great Wall of China, with the aim of raising further funds for Headway. This time Becky will be pushed to the limit as she will face sweltering heat and steep gradients (at some places the gradient reaches 1:10) not to mention the thousands of steps she will have to negotiate at a high altitude.
Becky said: “With the North Pole marathon I had to face and endure freezing conditions but on a flat, icy surface. This is the opposite. I will be climbing upwards in incredible heat in high altitude. I’ve heard it can add up to 50% onto your normal time. This is going to be a thrilling but tough challenge”

“This time, my aim is to raise £5000 for Headway. We support victims of brain injury, their friends, families and carers. We receive no government funding and are totally reliant on the generosity of private donations. So please, please dig deep. Thank you so much.”
